中西方金钱观不同及对相关教育的影响

摘 要

随着中西方经济和文化交流的发展,金钱在人们的生活着起着越来越重要的作用。它已经成为财富的象征。然而在中西方交流的过程中,由于文化的差异,人们在对金钱的态度等许多方面的不同,直接影响着交流的效果。本课题通过中西方金钱观和教育观的不同的比较分析,对如何改善和提高孩子的金钱观教育提出建议,旨在为未来中西交流及相关教育提供一定的启示和方法。

1.Introduction

There is a famous saying that the money is a good servant and a bad master.There are two different types attitudes to the money which are doing the master of money or being a slave of money. The attitudes to the money is the basic attitudes to our lives. We both know that the money was born because of the needs of commodity exchange.With the high development of commodity economy, the money gradually become a symbol of wealth. So people put the money in the supreme position. If people can get the money, they think they can do everything. People exaggerate the role of money and advocate that the money makes the mare go at present.Marxism reveals the nature of money and historical roles scientifically.He regards money as the material wealth, which is human creation and serves for human.Humans should be the master of money rather than the slaves of money. People rely on their own abilities to create wealth and access to property.There are more important and precious things than the money in the word.However,because cultural context differences and culture differences, the views of money between the West and the East are different.The Chinese culture emphasize “the cultivation of one’s moral character,the running of one’s family,the administration of a state,the peace and security of the world.”(Ai Lin,2005) The languages reflect national characteristics because the languages not only contain nationality"s histories and the cultural contexts. Languages and cultures influence each mutually.Understanding the languages must understand their cultures. Shakespeare once said the money can make the black into white, ugly into beautiful ,wrong into right, and distinguished into humble. Indeed, in the face of the money, some people lost their consciences and fell into the evil. Even power, status, chastity, reputation, human nature, dignity and justice, such as non commercial things are also evolved into items up for grabs.Because of different views of money concepts between the East and the West,the ways of developing the children on concepts on money are also different.These differences have big influences in their growths.Chinese parents should learn the western way of developing their children on concepts of money.

  1. Literature Review

With the development and the depth of the economic lives,the money has become a hot topic which the society has to attach much importance to the problem now. And different cultural differences between China and the West make them treat money have big difference. These differences are big questions,which how to change and affect our future and our personalities developments. And in the treatment of children"s money education ,there is a difference between the West and the East .Chinese Family Education History is written by Zhao Zhongxin who is a professor in the university.Professor Zhao thinks because of the culture differences,the West and the East have a big difference in the regard of the education.However ,the author clarifies on the impact of depth and the influence of the concept of money to children. The Aims of Education Same Areas of Controversy written by Phierbaha Tom thinks that parents’ biggest false is they stand in their position and interfere childrens nature development. The author agree with his opinions. The style of American education written by Yang Ai Lin thinks that parents should cultivate the kids’ moral characters. From these books ,I know much about the differences about the West and the East. On this basis,I think we should educate the children to develop the correct money values.From these books,I actually know what is the real education. Issues in Economics Today written by Robert C,in this book ,who states the links between the economics and education,says that the economics have great influence in kids education.And the degree of the economics development reflects the degree of the education.In my opinions,I agree with his ideas.Because of the different degree development of the economics between the West and the East, their kids’ education shows great difference to the money.A Chinese Perspective on Teaching and Learning written by Betty C.Eng,It focus on the Chinese kids behaviors.The Report of Chinese Family Education written by Huang Xu and Educaton in Preschool Kids written bu Chen Heqin, From these books,we can analysis the reason of their actions.And what influence will be caused. It is very important and necessary to the paper. In the paper ,the author make some supplements on the basis of these books.

3.Differences of the Concepts on Money between China and the West

3.1 The Definition of the Money

What is the money? What is the meaning of the money? Some people think that the money brings the greed.Some people think that it makes people have a better lives,and some people think it is just a medium .In my opinions,the money is just a way of consuming.However,because of culture differences,the definitions of the money are different In face of the complicated world, how to help their children set up a correct the view of money is very important. We should let the kids know it is just a way to communicate with others.

3.2The Concepts on Money in China

Generally speaking, when Chinese people have money ,they always do two things: buy houses and have families.The views of the money in China are also conservative.However,they choose to devote much money to the country and the humanity in the West. Chinese people like to save money, but Europeans and Americans are contrary.They think that money are spent only when it is useful or just a good-looking sheets of paper. Actually this world doesn"t belong to someone, even if you paid for bought, but also use temporarily only.So the western people pay attention to spending and consuming. Chinese people dare to spend the money and they would choose to deposit their money to the bank.However,the Western people are used to spending the future money. These fully reflects the different cultures between the West and the East. The Chinese people count clearly on face to face. The Chinese people will not invest or buy any spots regardless of how much they are sure. And the Chinese people also hate debt. When Chinese people want to borrow money,they usually do not need guarantee because the Chinese people have good reputation. They borrow money from their family members.Saving money has become a part of Chinese lives.On the other hand,Chinese people believe that money is worthless.And the money is symbol of the power. In order to pursuit the money, people can do everything.They think that money is essential.However,Chinese scholars believe that money have four evil things.It can lead to greed,consider their own ,arrogant for friends and mean.

3.3The Concepts on Money in the West

While Americans think that money is the symbol of ability,success and strength.The way of spending is specific.The western people actually do not care about how much money they are having,in the contrast,they just choose to enjoy it. Americans do not like earning money that accumulated,but they like to choose to the way of consumption,even excessive consumption,which reflects that they want to be the leaders of consuming.Americans realize that life is more than having things. As well,they think happiness can"t be bought, but it can be shared.American people do not have other money because Americans don"t have a sense of saving money. When they want to buy houses or cars, most of them ask help for bank loans or payment by installments. You can buy everything by installments. From the house, TV, computer, furniture to toys, when you get paid a month later, you only pay back to the bank and sign the cheque .You can eat or drink again and again from the rest of the pocket money They enjoy their lifestyles .When you visit the American houses,you may be see the many things in their houses and you may think he is a rich man, actually they maybe owe debt.An American said:“ Parents encourage their children to work and earn money in their free time.On the one hand,this will save some some expense ,and more importantly,on the other hand,it will develop children’s immolation at early age.”(Jennifer Tin,P12,2005) The Americans believe that nothing belongs to you in the world . Even if you pay off the debt, you just use it in a short time . As long as I get the right to use, no matter who owe them without debt, now it belongs to mine.You belong yourself in this world. Americans are very real and they attach great importance to the concept of "now”.

3.4The Comparisons of the Concepts on Money between China and the West

Western people regard money as the death of the thing while the Chinese people regard the money as survival. Chinese people are unwilling to spend money easily. Saving money caused psychological pleasure. In the past, the great wealth of man often dig a big jar to hide the money.They do not spend money. It reflects that the Chinese people are afraid of debt and ashamed of debt. Owing a debt in their minds is a heavy burden and not sweet.Out of debt means out of danger.Westerner people are not afraid of owning debt from banks. However not willing to own debt from persons. Western business often put the thing to you firstly, and then ask you for money and call your debt. Although westerner people are in debt, their minds actually have no burden. On the contrary ,they feel at ease. The big enterprises and companies managed to loan the money from the banks and take on debt while making money.

  1. The Differences between China and the West about Developing the Children’s Concepts of Money

4.1 Developing the Children’s Concepts of Money in the West

In the West ,people think that the money and the morality do not have contradictions. Many young billionaires are willing to donate the money to the society even all-out donation,which is worth the Chinese people reflecting. It should be a reflection. In western countries, parents would tell children directly: we have more important things than buying the toys.If the kids want to buy something ,parents would never give the stress to the kids.In the contrast,parents would choose to give them some pocket money .In this process,the kids will learn to how to make a reasonable choice and how to manage the money .From these behaviors,we can clearly recognize the differences between the West and the East.For example, In this regard, the well-known professor of finance played a demonstrating role for the people. He started from training the next generation.Under his inculcation, His son lu since the age of seven began to buy warrants and become a master of finance,who is even clever than many adults. He thinks that the money is a kind of props which was used to conduct various transactions.When it comes to money, he doesn’t think that making money is starting to save.In the contrast,making the money should try various ways to create more social wealth. A lot of parents have ignored the education to the kids about the money values in China. In the west,Most of pocket money is charged with the children.Parents don"t interfere with them directly.Once the children make mistakes due to improper use, parents do not help them tide over easily. Only in this way, children can know the serious consequences which was brought by the excessive consumption.Form this point,the children can learn to be responsible for their own consumption behaviors.However,in the west , As well as we know, the French people advocate consuming especially French women.Their per capita consumption amounts on clothing and cosmetics is even much more than American women. Now the French children not only are influenced by high consumption of their parents,but also the media such as TV, which also stimulate their desires to consume all the time .When the children are at the age of 3, who just have a preliminary understanding addition and subtraction, the French family will begin financial management course.French parents think that letting the children have their own private savings is beneficial to cultivate children in a certain economic independence.However, in the East,the parents think the children should firstly learn to save the money.They will think of all kinds of methods to restrain the consumption of the children,which is in contrast to the western parents.In this way,Chinese parents should learn from the French parents.Kids should learn how to make money by themselves at young age.Their independence and autonomy are higher than children in China.We should change another way to educate our kids to consume.In France, parents will let the children have private savings earlier .They believe“If the love of the good,the beauty and the truth had been implanted properly in their minds at the very beginning,they would not live so foolishly.”(Karl Weter,P5,2002)

French parents think that letting the children have their own private savings early can cultivate children"s economic independence. At Christmas, children may have to get 1-5 euros allowance from adults for the first time .Instead ,they would encourage them to consume reasonably. After consumption, they will communicate with children and analysis if the consumption is reasonable and necessary. The children can obtain experience and lessons from consumption.As a result , The children in the west has a clearer the concepts of money than in China.

4.2 Developing the Children’s Concepts of Money in China

In the traditional Chinese education, the kids can"t contact with money because of the gentleman education. Phierbaha says “parents’ biggest false is they stand in their position and interfere childrens nature development.”(Phierbaha,2001) Most children can"t tell from coins, cards and credits. When the children saw their parents purchase goods, they think credits and cards are filled with magic.Mistakenly assuming that the money is like the pie in the sky which cannot run out the forever.They don"t know how much his parents monthly salary is until they become into adulthood in China. Preschool children may also can"t understand the relationships between credit cards and money. So the first step is letting the kids know the money. In front of the children, the parents had better use cash consumption; Counting money can let the children also involved! This can teach him learn to count, operate and develop his basic living skills.To reasonable consumption, some parents would use "can"t afford to buy" excuse to refuse to the requirements of children to buy toys i n China.To each family, how to help children to coordinate the relationship between the desires and resources become very important. Developing a financially responsible child is a new subject to the whole world. Chinese kids are used to forcing their parents to meet their needs if they want to eat or drink without pocket money.If their parents do not meet their requirements ,they would choose to cry .At this time ,most of the parents ,they choose to compromise.If not, the kids would not stop unreasonable behaviors. They believe that the purpose of their parents earning money is to give them to spend .They don"t have the sense of making money by themselves.However,kids cannot ask parents casually in the West. The money what parents give their children is planned and their parents also have requirements .They need to know the purposes of spending. If the children want to have their own pocket money ,they have to work to earn money. Children will do some part-time jobs in the outside, like delivering papers and cleaning the lawn for their neighourho1od .

In China,children are allowed to do some part-time jobs after school because Chinese parents think it can make an influence to their kids study .So the children must get money from their parents.Chinese parents think that their children shouldn"t be connected with money at young age.In traditional Chinese education, money represents the the evil of everything. Our parents wants their children to be a gentle man(gentleman education).Children who has become into an adult can"t understand what"s the meaning of money. In China,most parents control the children"s allowance as much as possible. However,in the west,Most of pocket money is charged with the children.Parents don"t interfere with them directly. Once the children make mistakes due to improper use, parents do not help them tide over easily. Only in this way, the children can know the serious consequences which was brought by the excessive consumption.Form this point,the children can learn to be responsible for their own consumption behaviors.As the American president Nixon said: “ the task of Chinese education system is to train children into a person who is doice, completery listen to elder generation.In this way,they lose Chinese Darwin and Einstein.”(Huang Xu,2004)

  1. Conclusions

Children are the expectation of their parents and the hope of a nation.Family education is not only an important potent of education but also the first lesson to a child,which will be remembered forever .”(Zhao Zhongxin,P1,1991)The experts point out that parents should teach children to have economic minds and train children to develop good financial habit.They think that this kind of education should be earlier rather than later. The children who grow up can deal with the relationship between people and money if they accept a proper money education. What is the correct view of the money? While the rich think that the money can lead to evil, money itself is not terrible.The parents should clarify their own values of money, otherwise they are unable to successfully teach children because children learn and know this world by their observations. In view of the different ages, education of money is also different. “Family education is a society use to educate new generation with aims and systems.”(Chen Henqin,2006)

1.The children who are 3 to 6 years old

The experts suggest that parents can teach the kids by playing some interesting games.By games let the kids understand coins and the changes.When they grow older,parents can take them to go shopping and discuss with them about the price of the purchased items. Almost every parent will meet such a problem;when parents take your children to the shopping mall, if you don"t let children to buy what they want, they will be angry to play. To avoid such things happening, it is better to speak well before you go out .In this way, children will be carefully considered in the process of the whole shopping. In addition, parents should teach children to learn to give and help others.Parents should give the opportunity to the children to go to school to study and have a warm home, which can let the children grow better.

2. The children who are 7 to 12 years old

Children can understand the relationship between the behaviors and results around the age of 7. They begin to make decisions by themselves. In this period,parents can give children some pocket money to train themselves. Parents must remember that the money is not the purpose of letting children to flaunt family economic status.In contrast, the purpose is letting the children learn how to use and manage the money.This is the most important. When a child holds a number of money, he will learn to choose. Some parents put the pocket money with the high and low scores or how much housework they do.Some parents give the kids some pocket money without limits;children are given as they want to give which can cause bad effects.So we should reflect constantly the purpose of giving children pocket money.The way is letting the children learn how to use and manage the money. All the practice is aim to achieve the goal.They also should study hard because it is their responsibilities. If parents pay children to a certain money in learning and doing housework,this sense of responsibility to the normal children will be hurt. Giving money without limits can not let the children learn to how to use and manage the money. Allowances provides an opportunity to learn to save. A couple, the husband is a lawyer and his wife is a teacher, whose life is better. They would give their daughter 6 dollars weekly.The couple save a percentage of money every month and they also encouraged her daughter to do so. Their daughter said that she would use a part of her pocket money to buy comic books and school supplies and savings would be deposited in the bank.She said that when she grows up, she wants to t buy a house or a car.She can also use it to help people who are difficulties.

3.The children who are13 to 17 years old

The children should master how to control spending. Should parents give their children to buy his long-awaited new brand-name sports shoes? Many parents will face this typical problem. How to decide, not only depends on your income levels, but also depends on you and your children"s values. There is an example.Ms Han was against to encourage her child to buy so expensive designer sneakers, but later, she changed her mind. She said that designer shoes are more durable and look really good in fact. The women felt gratified that her child has gradually learned to how to spend the reasonable disposal of money in hand.When children ask parents for money, the parents should not be always agreeing with his requirements.The children who are so easy to get the money is not beneficial to cultivate their independence and self-esteem. The ultimate goal of education is to cultivate their sense of economic independence to the teenagers. Parents can keep some advice in mind as they begin educate the financial socialization of their children.Parents should encourage and praise the kids rather than criticize and rebuke actions taken and allow the kids to learn by mistakes and by successes.Parents are consistent while taking children’s differences into account and include all family members in money management discussions,decision making,and activities as appropriate for their age.Parents should learn to explain to the kids what they can do and can not do.

The life-long benefits of teaching children good money habits make it well worth the effort. Children who are not taught these lessons pay the consequences for a life-time. Some parents don"t teach children about money because they think they shouldn"t talk about money with children, don"t have the time, or think they don"t have enough money. Parents should take the time to teach children about money regardless of their income and should start when children are young. Most people have strong feelings and opinions about money, based on childhood experiences and the values and beliefs of their families. Most often, these experiences, values, and beliefs are different for each parent. It is vital for the healthy development of children that parents talk about these feelings and opinions and establish a consistent approach to teaching children about money.Money has a very important role in our everyday life.By comparing Chinese and western the attitudes of the money, we should study the attitudes of cool towards the money.We also know that money is not everything .it just said it is our normal tools. We also want to learn western training methods to develop the child"s positive attitudes towards money. Learning how to finance and how to deal with the money is an issue.The right attitude towards money should not only know the role of currency in economic life, but also blindly worship of money.We should set up the correct money values and do the gentleman who has the right concept of money.
