The Designing of English Classroom Activities:A Case Study in Primary School 小学英语课堂活动设计策略及案例分析文献综述

1.Introduction

1.1 Research Background:

With the development of information technology more innovative teaching techniques are applied in the teaching procedures ,which is a tremendous change in a typical primary classroom. There is new appearance in designing English classroom activities. More and more English teachers actively try to adopt the activity-centered and task-based teaching model. However, through teaching observation, we can find that a majority of teachers pay too much attention to the interest of activity and ignore the effectiveness of activity. In fact, the high efficiency is much more significant than interest in terms of designing of classroom activity. In my opinion, how to effectively design classroom activity is a problem expected to be solved urgently. Teaching activities designing and case study in primary school will be analyzed concretely. English classroom activities is a very important course for English-major students, which helps to improve the students' interests. In the teaching practice, traditional approach is monotonous and the students have no interest in learning. Therefore, the learning efficiency is quite low. This article tries to provide some classroom-teaching activities in terms of warm-up procedure, lead-in procedure, presentation procedure and consolidation which can improve the learning interest, help students master the learning skills as well as cultivate their communicative ability.

1.2 Need for the study

Practically speaking, it can provide the clear details and give the readers useful suggestions. Also, strategies are put forward and specific cases are analyzed. Meantime, some corresponding suggestions are proposed so as to improve the teaching effect. With the guidance of New English Curriculum for Chinese Primary School, every teacher should pay attention to how to improve effectiveness of teaching class. The study can satisfy them and give them many practical suggestions.

Theoretically speaking, the well-designed classroom activities could maximize the teaching effects. Through the careful designing of English classroom activities, the quality of teaching will improve better and better.

2.Literature Review

1. Clear objectives are required for the design of activities, that is, these objectives the activities are aimed at directly or indirectly include linguistic knowledge, language skills, emotional attitudes, study strategies and cultural awareness. As some teachers are encountered with derivation in understanding of the objective ”to stimulate students` interest in learning English”, their activities focus on ”interests” instead of ”the teaching objectives and contents”. In this sense, we can have this formula: lively games #8211; shift in attention #8211; poor effects of objectives. For example, there is a lesson to learn words of colors. After explanation of the words, the students are asked to say the colors of the balloons and trample them accordingly. However, it goes on completely away from the teaching of this lesson as those joining the activities too obsessed with how to trample the balloons to remember the words, and the rest students just seeing it as pleasure likewise. Another example is that for dialogue teaching, the teacher instructs in the sequence from word, sentence to conversation. Because of too much emphasis on the explanation of words, it takes certain amount of time on word reading and word game, resulting in time inadequacy for conversation teaching and thus teaching objective derivation. 2. Multi-dimensions of objectives are required for the design of activities. To learn English at primary school, students should be trained for not only the language skills and cross-cultural awareness but also good mental qualities and learning habits, as well as spirits for cooperation, exploration and innovation. Learning methods and thinking training for students deserve great attention as to lay a solid foundation for their lifelong learning to achieve a comprehensive and harmonious state of development mentally and physically. It doesn#8217;t mean for all classes to be multi-dimensional but one to two breakthroughs for each. 3. Design of teaching activities is required to meet law of students' cognizance. Students follow the cognitive laws of learning from old knowledge to new lesson, concrete to abstract, simple to complex, and mechanical to practical. Most of the teachers are quite concerned with the connection of old and new knowledge and design of teaching activities based on real life of students, so that students can accumulate the experiences of English acquisition through the activities. It is worthy of attention to the progressive levels of each language activity. For example, if the first activity focuses on the repeated imitation and mechanical practice of language, please pay attention to improve its interest property; and the second language activity can be positioned in the initial output of language. 4. Design of teaching activities is required to meet the law of language acquisition. From the very beginning of birth, a baby will go through the process of watching, hearing and speaking. As a language, English has its own linguistic rules and habits. As a complete system of symbols, it can be used for communication when it comes to connect with semantics through recognition and memory of the learner. To enable our students to learn English well, we should understand that teaching activity is to provide students with a platform for language performance. Teachers should create a good language environment to enrich the lives of students so that they can master the English well quickly in a relaxed environment. Only when having a good command of English can the students express their wishes with the correct statements and freely communicate with people. These four points are the main views of Du Zhixian(2012).

A teacher should timely adjust his teaching pace to properly give students time to digest and reflect; otherwise it will cast bad influence on the learning process due to psychological anxiety caused by thinking deviation. Instructional design is a reasonable basis for effective classroom teaching, which treats teaching as a system to integrate all elements of class teaching system and links of the whole process. Instructional design refers to three aspects: teaching material, teacher and learning. Class discipline management mainly refers to external control and regulation on the behavior of students on classes, which reflects the relationships between teachers and students and that of classmates, subject to the requirements of the teaching task. In the process of class management, teachers should output the expectations of teaching goals on students into regular procedure of class activities, with part of which as class rules to guide the behavior of students and promote their enthusiasm to learn. Good class discipline and order management includes precautions and countermeasures management. Promote students' motivation to learn to maintain their learning attention and interest at a relatively high level; calmly deal with classroom emergencies and rationally exert praise and punishment to transform their negative learning behaviors into positive ones, thus ensuring classroom learning effects. Hu Chundong (2012) mainly emphasizes the importance of the designing of English classroom in a classroom which has a poor classroom discipline.

Flexible and diversified teaching methods and means can ensure the establishment of effective teaching. From the perspective of materials it refers to teaching objectives, teaching content, and teaching outset and etc.; from the perspective of teachers it requires the role of teachers, teaching situation, teaching methods, teaching management, media selection, teaching evaluation and teaching processes, etc; from the perspective of students it means adjustment on students' interest and motivation and learning methods. Zhai yu (2012)puts forward that, regarding class teaching activities, a teacher should focus on the diversity of forms of activities and the creation of a variety of teaching situations, to stimulate students` interest and enthusiasm in learning English. Class teaching will be effective with innovation of teaching methods and the implementation of three-dimensional phase-oriented teaching to instruct class activities with students actively focusing on teaching objectives.
