1. Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Primary English teaching is at the elementary education stage, that is to say, the English teaching level of primary school English teachers directly affects the proficiency and development of primary school students in their future English study. Therefore, it is imperative to improve teaching standard. However, some primary English class teaching is still very boring due to the failure of arousing primary students#8217; interest of studying English. ”Primary English curriculum standards” points out that interest is the key to learning language. Stimulating primary students#8217; interest in learning English is an important task for English Teaching in primary schools.

In the new era of time, primary school English teachers should actively adopt innovative English teaching models, such as Game Teaching Method. Through numerous teaching experiments, the game teaching method is welcomed by many primary students. It is a flexible and effective method which is under no control of conditions and time. Adding appropriate games in English classroom, which are related to the teaching aims, contributes to stimulating primary students#8217; interest in English study and help primary teachers easier to fulfill the teaching goal. Although many primary English teachers have realized the advantage of using games in English teaching classroom, there are still many problems: how to design games and how to use games correctly.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study

”Primary English curriculum standards” points out that interest is the key to learning language. Stimulating primary students#8217; interest in learning English is an important task for English Teaching in primary schools. According to the characteristics of children, games can be a good way to attract their attention and make them feel happy and enjoy learning.

Game teaching method actually connects games with teaching contents, aims to impart knowledge in the way of amusement. This way not only effectively stimulates and maintains primary students#8217; interest, but also fully improve the quality of teaching. Thus it can be seen that the designing of games plays an important role in game teaching method.

Firstly, the study aims to discuss how to design games. Teachers design games to help students acquire knowledge and practice their communicative competence. On the one hand, teachers should take teaching aims and teaching contents into consideration when they design games. Different teaching contents and teaching aims require different game design. Many primary English teachers have no clear understanding on teaching aims and the misuse of games will distract students#8217; attention and bring about negative effect in class-teaching. The following questions should be considered when primary English teachers prepare lessons, have lessons and finish lessons: what are the key points and difficult points? Can these games help to strengthen the key points and break through teaching difficulties? How it works in class? What they have learned from these games? Taking these questions into consideration when teachers design games guarantee the teaching content is more than the form. On the other hand, the age and the current English proficiency of primary students should also be considered when teachers design games. Well-planned games should be suited to primary students in terms of complexity, form and method. Then, well-planned games should be suited to the interests and mental and physical feature of primary students. These games can attract students#8217; attention easily and arouse the enthusiasm of students. The last but not least, primary English teachers should update games as soon as possible. Outdated games make students get tired and lose interest in studying so that only different form of games can satisfy students#8217; intense curiosity.
