1. Introduction 1.1 #160;Research background Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan on March 4, 1965. Although his main business is still a doctor, he always loves writing. When he created The Kite Runner, the World Trade Center fell. His wife was convinced that this is an opportunity to tell the world about the story of Afghanistan, so she strongly persuaded him to send the manuscript to the publishing house. At that time, almost all articles about Afghanistan were describing Osama Bin Laden, the Taliban organization and terrorism. Afghanistan has been demonized by the world in these misunderstandings and prejudices. Hosseini believes that in order to make the world more comprehensive about Afghanistan, it is necessary to describe Afghanistan before the invasion of the Soviet Union and before the Taliban dictatorship. Finally, in June 2003, the story was officially published. This is the birth path of the The Kite Runner. The Kite Runner has received much praise from the literary world as soon as it was published. It has been translated into a variety of texts and is also well received in non-English speaking countries. After the publication, he won several awards including the American Library Association Award, the French Radio World Witness Award, and so on. The film of the same name, which was adapted from it, won the Academy Awards, the American Golden Globe Award and the British Film Academy Award. . 1.2 Need of the study Although Khaled Hosseini and his work have been well received by literary critics and readers around the world, his work has just been introduced to China as he is still an emerging writer, and the research on him and his works is not too many. Most of the current research articles on The Kite Runner focus on the image of kites. Some people think that kites are representatives of friendship and symbolize the sincere friendship between Amir and Hassan. Others believe that kites are the incarnation of hope and the hero's yearning for a better life. In addition to the discussion of kites, there are articles that analyze the characteristics of characters from the perspective of multiple themes. Other studies have focused on the war, the relationship between the master and the servant, and the pursuit of the protagonist. Besides, while a small part of the study looks at the characteristics of its initiation story, the depth of research is not enough. As an initiation story, The Kite Runner still has many more to explore. This study combines the method of writing novels with Amir's road to salvation and analyzes the characteristics of its initiation novels, and aims to fill the gaps in previous studies. 1.3. Literature review The Kite Runner is the debut and famous work of the American Afghan writer Khaled Hosseini. He is known as a dark horse in the literary world. After the publication of the novel, it quickly set off a wave of literary circles. This book takes the growth experience of the protagonist Amir as the main line, and gradually develops the storyline about the influence of childhood events on Amir, describes Amir's experience of making mistakes, betrayal, repentance and atonement, and gradually constructs Amir's road of self-redemption. The work is shown to the world in the social turmoil in Afghanistan in the 1970s, and the protagonist Amir survived in this repressed and distorted era. He struggled to grow up in different cultural backgrounds. He has gone through hardships, from self-doubt to self-affirmation, and finally completed his self-salvation. 1.3.1 Growth and redemption As a literary genre, the initiation novel is not studied for a long time. At the same time, many American scholars began to pay attention to the research of initiation novels in the 1960s, and a large number of related research results have appeared. For example, Marcos's What is an Initiation Story? , Lunler's Growing in the United States and Kiel's Adolescent Psychoanalysis in American Novels. More well-known in these researches is Coyle's "Young People in American Literature - Growth Themes", which contains five research papers on adolescent growth. It set off a wave of research on youth growth in the United States at the time. In contrast, domestic research on literary growth themes and growth novels did not appear until the 1990s. Zhang Deming mainly studied the growth process of the protagonist in his Huckleberry Finn and Adult Ritual. Professor Xu Dan profoundly described the significance of the theme of growth and the complex relationship of adult rituals in The Empty Vessels - The Growth Ceremony of Adult Ceremony and European and American Literature. In addition to the theme of initiaion novels, what is more important is the theme of salvation. Spiritual salvation is an eternal theme in foreign literature. Because it is influenced by the religious culture of Christianity, it is also the most prominent theme in foreign culture. The Kite Runner is such a novel with the main theme of spiritual salvation and growth. The full text is based on the main experience of the protagonist as the main clue, showing that the protagonist has finally realized the salvation of himself after experiencing his inner painful struggle and long pursuit process. It is not uncommon to find a novel about the theme of human salvation. The Kite Runner is just one of many books. But this book can achieve today's achievements, just as Hosseini said at the UN awards ceremony. "There is a soul behind every dusty face. It is determined to take the dust from the faces of ordinary people in Afghanistan. And to show the incitement of the soul behind the world." 1.3.2 Researches on The Kite Runner Because the storyline of The Kite Runner is shocking, touching, and vivid, it has won many awards. As soon as it was published, it received the attention of Western literary critics, and scholars who have studied it. However, due to the late introduction of its Chinese version of domestic time, the current research on The Kite Runner is not perfect. And the current research mainly has the several following aspects: image of Amir and Hassan, religious conflicts and ethnic conflicts, racial discrimination, betrayal and self-redemption, the symbolic meaning of ”Kite” and the theme of growth. When it comes to the combination of redemption and initiation novel, there are some related studies in China. About sin and redemption, this novel is mainly about sin and redemption, and the way Amir was able to get rid of inner sin and return to calm was redemption (Li Yuxia,2008). And some studies concentrate on the subject of the growth, they believe that this story is mainly about the growth of Amir (Zhang Guolong Chen Lu,2007). There are also some studies combining these two important theme to study The Kite Runner. Amir has learned of self-redemption in the process of his growth, and he has grown up in redemption (Jiang Xiaoqing,2010). In all the research on The Kite Runner, there are many articles that are analyzed from other angles. The image of kite plays a vital role in constructing the theme of the novel (Wang Jianrong,2009), and elaborates it from a new aspect of eco-criticism and finds the special ecological things in the novel (He Xiaojuan,2010). Besides, Jin Qianqian explores the study which analyze the psychology of Amir from the theory of archetype criticism. And Chou Duohong expresses her idea that ”redemption is based on the kite image and human nature return” in the thesis whose name is ”The Kite of Questing for Identity”. There are also some papers based on the history and politics of Afghanistan. Because of religious and political problem, Hassan#8217;s tragic fate is inevitable. It is the sins of Hassan#8217;s biological parents and the racial discrimination in Afghanistan that determine Hassan#8217;s fate. Only if all the nations united as one to resist violence, can Afghanistan get rid of religious prejudice, persecution and racial discrimination and has a better future. (Li Jing,2009). All the previous studies give the author sufficient enthusiasm and information to write this paper. The studies mentioned above are of a lot of academic value, and they are useful to this thesis. And this study will further explore this novel on the basis of previous research results to elaborate on the theme growth and redemption of Amir. Works Cited [1] Khaled Hosseini.
