2. 研究的基本内容、问题解决措施及方案

1. Introduction The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, is a fiction taking New York and Changdao Island of the twenties of the 20th century as background, written by an American writer F.Scott.Fitzgerald, considered as the symbol of American literature in the "Jazz Age". The Great Gatsby tells the love story between young Gatsby and rich Daisy. In the paper, we will mainly discuss the application of symbolism in the article emphatically, make analyses of some aspects such as scene, things and colors in the novel. The failed love story between Daisy and Gatsby is linked up by these symbolic strings, and their love story makes the theme deepened because of the use of symbolism. The whole story symbolizes the evaporation of the American dream except the symbols of the concrete things. After the first World War, American society was full of blind worship of social status and wealth. Fitzgerald(Francis Scott Fitzgerald, 1896-1940), one of the most outstanding American writers of the 20th century, described general mood of America society of ” Jazz Age” as well as a generation of young Americans#8217; fanatical pursuit of social status and wealth and disillusionment through the Great Gatsby. This literature work with distinctive era color shows Fitzgerald #8217;s sensitivity in literary creation, at the same time, it reflects experience and value orientation of Fitzgerald in this period. This literature work not only has a strong artistic value, but also has important realistic significance for the description and sarcasm of the distorted value. 2. Literature Review Gatsby was born in a poor farmers#8217; family in the mid-west of the United States. Due to the first world, Gatsby, who was drafted into the army, got a chance to pick up and fell in love with a rich girl, Miss Daisy. However, on account of his low status, he could not get married to Daisy at once. And then he and Daisy made an agreement that they would got married when he change the fate of the poor. But when Gatsby came back from the battlefield afterwards, he was surprised to find that Daisy had been married to rich Tom. Gatsby who beard the heavy blow attributed Daisy's betrayal to the lure of money, then he started to accumulate wealth by hook or by crook. After years of struggle, Gatsby finally got rid of the fate of the bottom of society and became a mysterious rich and powerful man that everybody envied and admired. After becoming a billionaire, Gatsby bought a luxury villa on the opposite side of Tom, and enjoy night life. Besides, with the help of Daisy#8217;s cousin, Nick , he met Daisy again and looked forward to reviving an old dream. When Tom knew the truth, he flew into a furious rage and required Daisy to make a choice between him and Gatsby, and Gatsby also persuaded Daisy to break up with Tom, but Daisy did not make a clear decision because she still attached to stable life. Immediately after the quarrel, Daisy killed Mrs Wilson - Tom's mistress on her way home. Gatsby actively took the responsibility of the traffic accident because he would keep Daisy safe from any harm, at the same time, Tom shifted the crime of adultery onto Gatsby, and he bewitched Wilson to kill Gatsby. After the death of Gatsby, Daisy's cousin, Gatsby's best friend Nick held a funeral For Gatsby, and the dismal condition of the funeral let Nick feel disappointed to the society and the crowd with wealth and status in the society, so he cut off the contact with Tom and Daisy, and return to his hometown from New York. Whether from the angle of artistic attainments or ideological content, "the Great Gatsby is Fitzgerald's most excellent literary work, and due to the work, Fitzgerald has established his position in the history of literature in the 20th century in the United States. The pursuit of wealth and love accompanies with Gatsby's whole life. In his ideal, "love dream" and "wealth dream" are the main content. In Gatsby's view, the "wealth dream" is the premise of realizing the "love dream", so, it is to say that the "love dream" is the purpose of Gatsby, and the "wealth dream" is the means of realizing the "love dream" . In the Great Gatsby, none of the pursuit of these two kinds of dreams can be dispensed with, because the relationship between them reflects the the value orientation common among young people and the state of the society in the United States in the ”Jazz Age” , at the same time, over pursuit for these two kinds of dream is the main reason for that the correct values were distorted. The end of the Great Gatsby marks the disillusionment of Gatsby#8217;s ideal. For Daisy, there does not exist "love" between her and Gatsby , there is only the naked pursuit of wealth and the use of Gatsby#8217;s emotion. As for Gatsby, since "love dream" has been disillusioned, the "wealth dream" ,as the the means of realizing the "love dream", would be no any value at this time. So the departure of Daisy and Tom marks the comprehensive disillusionment of Gatsby#8217;s ideal. Meanwhile, corrupt nature resulting from the integration of Daisy and the upper society of the United States also reflects a distorted values. Daisy's beauty added the ”temptation” and ”attraction” of distorted values, and Daisy's selfishness, grimness and duplicity also highlight the characteristic of nothingness this kind of values that itself has. Fitzgerald shows the upper society people's state of mind by means of the characterization of the image Daisy, and it helps to find the reason for Gatsby#8217;s fanatical pursuit of wealth and social status, in addition, it reveals the fact that the values existing in te society of the "Jazz Age" is not desirable. Gatsby has devoted all his life to his illusory ideal, and have created a virtual world with his own hands. Although he clearly realized that money is Daisy's pursuit and love, he did not identify that he and Daisy were in different class and they had different values , the values and value orientation that Daisy had are what Gatsby, who was born in a poor family, could not understand. Because of this, Gatsby's life and his fanatical pursuit of social status and wealth died away together. The American spirit is a part of the values in the United States and it has a long history, this kind of values emphasize that everyone has equal opportunity and people that work hard is bound to be successful in the United States. But with the change of the history of the United States, the understanding of American people to the American spirit also has changed: in the stage of western countries#8217; immigration to the United States , the connotation of the American spirit was the creation of freedom and free belief; With the development of the feudal landlord class, the connotation of the American spirit changed into the pursuit of success and happiness; With the prosperity of capitalism, the connotation of the American spirit has become the pursuit of wealth, love and career. And after the first world war, the American young generation abandoned the traditional concept of the American spirit, and changed the meaning of the American spirit into blind worship of social status and fanatical pursuit of social wealth. Fitzgerald, the Author of the Great Gatsby, was in this period of the first world war, in his works, whether in form or in content, they all has strong color of the era, and because Fitzgerald also belongs to the younger generation of the first world war, so his works also has a distinct personal feelings color. The American spirit written by Fitzgerald focused on the impact of the American spirit on the characters , at the same time, it showed the performance of the disconnection between the American spirit and American social reality, and showed the frustration that a generation of young Americans revealed in the face of the disillusionment of ideal. What is more, this performance emphasis and performance characteristics were reflected incisively and vividly in the Great Gatsby. 3. Conclusion Fitzgerald created Gatsby, in fanatical pursuit of wealth in order to get love as well as Daisy, who was dominated by social status and money corrosion with his sharp observation and excellent expressive ability. And their love ended in the death of Gatsby, which not only marks the prelude to the disillusion of American spirit, but also presents the society state of humanity warmth loss in the "Jazz Age". In "the Great Gatsby" , sadness shows among the words and between the lines proves that the publicity of equal opportunity for all and everyone can succeed of American values is a lie of capitalist class, at the same time, this literature work with very strong personal feelings color reflects the sadness and helplessness expressed by Fitzgerald himself in the face of the American spirit and the disillusionment of it. Fitzgerald has carried on the description and presentation of American social culture and value orientation of the "Jazz Age" through ”the Great Gatsby”, especially has a great realistic meaning for the description of the condition that the youth group had a fanatical pursuit of wealth and social status. Obviously, this kind of values is not desirable, the response and satire reality significance to this kind of values showed in ”the Great Gatsby” for the sake of leading readers to understand the corruption and nothingness of it and setting up a correct values. In addition, this kind of realistic significance can be used as reference to education of teenagers in our country.
