directed by gregory hoblit, the film primal fear made its debut in 1996 in america. most audiences are suffocated by the gripping plot of this film which is mainly about archbishop richard rushman of st.michael’s roman catholic church in chicago who is brutally murdered by a nineteen years-old boy, aaron stampler, who suffers from multiple-personality disorders. this film aims to explore and elaborate aaron’s inner thoughts which manifest the essence of primal fear.

recently, a series of criminal programs and movies have mushroomed on the screen. movies are prone to emphasize psychoanalysis of the criminals from the aspects of facial expression, oral language, gestures, and experiences in the past. exploring criminal’s mental activities is favorable for police to judge and figure out the case. fundamentally based on the theories of freud’s psychoanalysis, this paper will give a full explanation of aaron’s inner thoughts, which can make contributions to other similar cases in reality.

with the development of society pacing faster and faster, the anxiety and stress gradually accrue to modern people without cease. under this circumstance, schizophrenia occurs consistently which almost numbs the mass, nonetheless, people actually do not comprehend the struggle and torment in their hearts. this paper will compare the different mental activities under different personalities in particular, which is beneficial for readers to further understand that and heed the psychological health. in addition, this paper points that aaron’s traumatic experience of suffering from the death of his mother and abuses from his father as well as the tramping life in the streets brings about his psychological disorders. then what his girlfriend and the archbishop have done finally awake the psychological disorders and lure him to commit crimes. this analysis turns the spotlight on the teenagers who have traumatic experiences, which may draw the attention of parents and people in public to create a harmonious environment for the healthy growth of adolescents.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

This paper mainly centers on the psychological analysis of Aaron from three stages. The first stage when the hero is still Aaron unfolds us a timid, harmlessness and coward boy whose innocent face convinces the lawyer to believe him. In the second stage, however, a ferocious, savage and malicious murderer--Roy--is revealed all of sudden after his second personality has been awakened. In the end, the second personality overcomes and destroys the first personality totally and he becomes a downright evil person, which happens in the third stage. This paper will explore the different inner world of the hero in different stages and compare them thoroughly. According to the theory of Freud’s psychoanalysis, the personality structure includes id, ego, and superego. In this film, Aaron can be seen as ego and Roy is id, which will also be explained in details in the paper.

The main methodology of this paper is psychoanalysis. On the basis of those available limited bibliographies, this paper will completely explore Aaron’s mental states under different personalities and subtly compare his entirely contrary inner worlds. Besides, a series of supporting and persuasive examples in the movie will be listed and expounded in detail as well.
