1. Introduction

In June 2003, the official promulgation of "Outline of Basic Education Curriculum Reform (Trial)" was put forward for higher requirements of students’ reading ability and all aspects of teachers of English Reading class in junior high schools. In recent years, the national college entrance examinations have increased the difficulty of reading comprehension. With the aim of enabling students to achieve good grades in English, English reading class plays an important role in the whole English language teaching. In the peocess of English reading class, it is particularly important to develop and improve the students" reading ability. But compared with the importance of English reading class, there are some notable problems of the methods of traditional English reading class, such as some teachers’ much speech, students’ less practice, single teaching method, low teaching efficiency; some teachers’ blind practice of new teaching ideas, the blind pursuit of innovation and so on. Under the influence of the new curriculum standard, the research of teaching model of English reading is an important topic of Chinese basic education. Teachers are required to pay attention to the improvements of overall qualities of the language practice in teaching, the learning process, students" language skills language knowledge, learning strategies and cultural awareness and so on. In short, the improvement of students" reading ability is a long, gradual process, avoid by all means is too hasty. Interest is the driving force, to develop good reading habits is the premise and necessary reading skills guidance is the key, appropriate extracurricular supplement is required. Therefore, it is necessary to improve students" reading ability, teachers must develop students" reading habits, in order to enable them to master certain reading skills, and combined with the practice of reading training in class and out of class, cultivating and improving students" reading ability.

2. Literature Review

The new curriculum standard clearly points out English curriculum in junior high school should be based on the needs and characteristics of students , it should be set not only for the further development of students" basic language skills, but also for the improvement of students’ abilities of obtaining information, using information and analyzing and dealing with problem and so on. It should also develop students" ability of thinking and expressing in English gradually, creating the necessary conditions for further study.

There are the specific objectives of the curriculum reform.

It aims to change the tendency of too much emphasis on knowledge imparting, it emphasizes on the formation of active learning attitude, so that the process of obtaining basic knowledge and basic skills can also be the process of learning to learn and forming the correct values. It aims to change the phenomena of too much emohasis on subject standard, too many subjects and lack of integration. And it sets integrated curriculum to adapt to the needs of different regions and the development of students, reflecting equilibrium of curriculum structure.

It aims to strengthen the link between student"s life and modern society and the development of science and technology, it pays attention to the students" interest in learning and experience, the selection of lifelong learning necessary knowledge and skill. It aims to change the phenomena of too much emphasis on receptive learning, rote, mechanical training, it advocates students" active participation, diligent hands, and trains students’ abilities of collecting and processing information, obtaining new knowledge, analyzing and solving with problems and so on.

As an important component of language skills and one of the main parts of the language input, English reading occupies an important position of English teaching. As a consequence, training students" reading ability is one of the main teaching goals. Crook, a famous scholar, has repeatedly advocated a lot of reading in English as main means of English Teaching. Therefore, under the effect of the new curriculum standard, the goal of English reading class in junior high school is the emphasis on the cultivation of language ability, the improvement of ability of English reading comprehension and the ability of analysis judgment, to enable students to put the knowledge of English into practical use.

Thankfully, there have been many scholars research and explore problems and countermeasures of English reading class in junior high schools. Thompson Sylvia presented that the main task of practice teaching of English Reading is to train students’ independent reading ability and good reading habits. The principle of selecting reading materials, the scope of selection and the organization of teaching are essential to effective practice teaching (Thompson Sylvia 97).

Perfetti Charles A reviews the current database imperfect behind the status quo of college English reading, and put forward the use of network resources to establish a modern, fast and convenient new database of college English reading, and develop a platform for English reading (Perfetti Charles A 39). Robertson Phyllis discusses the application of context theory in English teaching of reading, including some problems met in reading comprehension test and some teaching methods related to context theory.

He Zhaoying points out one of the bottleneck and breakthrough of English teaching class is reading, and he explained that the students" limited intelligence caused by insufficient amount of reading. Therefore in addition to the necessary amount of vocabulary which is required by teaching materials, the seventh goal of the new curriculum standard is required for 23 million words (He Zhaoying 87).

Zhang Wei and Zhu Jiexiang both analyze problems of English reading class in the aspects of teachers and students.Teachers improve themselves from the monotonous teaching model and isolated grammar class and limited level of cultural knowledge.Students are in progress for changing from lacking enough language knowledge, reading strategies and cultural knowledge ( Zhang Wei 45; Zhu Jiexiang 67) .
At last Lin Zhen finds out the barriers of English Reading Comprehension, and put forward the corresponding countermeasures and suggestions according to the characteristics of students to provide a valuable reference for enhancing the teaching quality (Lin Zhen 153).

According to the requirements of the new curriculum standard, the training of students’ reading skills in reading class is equal important as the cultivation of students" reading abilities. This paper is based on the research of many scholars for the English reading class, analyzed and summarized the present situations and problems of English reading class which is influenced by the new curriculum standard, and put forward the corresponding solutions from the aspects of teachers and students.

3. A Survey about Reading Class

3.1 Research question

In order to find out how the new curriculum standard influences students" English reading ability and their attitudes towards English reading, this study mainly focuses on the following question: How can the new curriculum standard improve students" reading ability?

3.2 Purpose

The purpose of the questionnaire survey is to have a better understanding of psychological thoughts and phenomena of students’ English learning for enhancing the research (Wang 82). According to the results of the survey, it can be drawn that 61.33% of students hold the opinion that their interest in English reading has improved after the implementation of the curriculum standard. 8.66% of students think the implementation of the curriculum standard has little influence on their interest. 58.63% of the students think vocabulary is the biggest obstacle of reading, so they think that the amount of vocabulay has a great influence on reading. The results of the survey also show 95.94% of students think their teachers’ teaching views has changed and 89.48% of students think the teaching models also has changed. Most of the students think English class is beneficial for improving English. 57.89% of students think their reading methods which are taught and indirected by teachers have changed greatly after the implementation of the curriculum standard while 11.9% of students hold the opposite opinions. The main causes of influencing students’ interest are teachers’ effect, course content or equipment and environment in the class. 63.15% of students often develop good habits in the process of reading. Students think good teachers should be kind, humor, and have solid professional knowledge of English. Students are eager for a relaxed and lively English lesson. Extracurricular English activities will arouse students" learning interest.

4. Results and Discussion

4.1 Teaching model of reading class

The results of the survey also show 89.48% of students think their teachers’ teaching models has changed after the implementation of the curriculum standard. In the past, English reading class mainly focused on teaching materials and teachers. In reading teaching, teachers paid attention to impart the knowledge in the textbooks. At the same time students passively accept content which the taught by teachers, with writing down listening notes (Brown 112). 10.52% of students think their teachers’ teaching models has little changes. Among lots of ways of teaching English, teachers mainly choose the simple way of just answering questions, which is lack of the overall understanding of reading materials and is limited to the surface of reading materials. So, it is difficult to improve students" ability of reading comprehension.
However the new curriculum standard requires that reading teaching is not only to acquire some knowledge of the language but also to obtain useful information from it, and master some reading skills.Reading is a way of understanding and absorbing information.

4.2 Teaching behavior in reading class

On one hand, teaching content is often monotonous. The results of the survey show 95.94% of students think their teachers’ teaching behavior has changed after the implementation of the curriculum standard. Teachers seldom recommend good reading materials which in suitable for students (Luo 39). As a consequence, in the process of learning English, students can only read reading exercises, in addition to the contents contained in the textbook. Even if the students want to take the initiative to read some new English article, without useful guidelines, they can not choose the reading materials efficiently.

On the other hand, teachers’ settings in the curriculum are lack of scientific and rational qualities. 8.66% of students think the implementation of the curriculum standard has little influence on their interest. English reading class in junior high schools should include the training of extra-curricular reading materials, meaning that how to develop the students" reading ability through intensive reading and extensive reading. Many teachers are lack of scientific and reasonable combination of the twos (Krashen 85). As a matter of a fact, under the influence of new curriculum standard, students" amount and time of reading can be guaranteed. Research on the teaching of English reading can be enough, practice can be enough. And there are reasonable arrangement between teachers and classes, so that we can improve the training of English reading ability.

4.3 Views of teachers in reading class

Teachers have changed and updated the concept of teaching. The results of the survey also show 95.94% of students think their teachers’ teaching views has changed. In the past, English teaching focused on "explaining" teaching model which is centered on teachers. It laid too much emphasis on the teaching of words and language structure but ignored the training of students’ the ability of obtaning information content, namely in the teaching, only pay attention to the reading of "quality". For according to the survey, 4.06% of students think their teachers’ teaching views has little changes. Also some teachers laid too much emphasis on reading of "quantity", they only provided the correct answers for reading materials without teaching students how to understand and analyze articles.

At present, teachers created a new reading teaching model in the teaching practice, which is focused on students, can arouse the students" interest in independent reading and cultivate students" ability of language use, aiming to create an effective way to enhance students" reading ability.

4.4 Changes of students’ learning approach

63.15% of students often develop good habits in the process of reading. In the past, many teachers in reading teaching tend to neglect of the training of students" reading interest, reading speed and reading ability development. Students by traditional English reading class in junior high schools are often limited in the textbooks and reading materials. Due to the limitation of reading materials, the students study more and more but feel more and more dull (Chen 74).

The stage of junior high school is the critical period of the formation of the students" reading ability. At present, students read widely, broaden their horizons and improve their reading skills and reading ability due to the new curriculum standard. As is proved by practice, students gain more knowledge with greater amount of language practice, will strengthen more the reading ability. The new curriculum standards require that teachers should provide students with suitable reading materials, help students enlarge the knowledge and vocabulary, so as to improve the students" reading interest and ability.
Driven by curiosity and desire and other factors, students no longer feel extracurricular reading as a kind of burden, they also actively take the initiative to do things. This is the true realization of the cultivation of interest and ability. Students reading speed is accelerated apparently.

Students" autonomous learning and English application ability have been improved by a lot of English reading. Not only students’ abilities of listening and speaking are improved, but also the improvement of reading ability has a solid foundation.

4.5 Reading methods of students

First of all, vocabulary is the foundation of language .The amount of vocabulary directly affects students" reading speed, the depth of understanding and accuracy. 57.89% of students think their reading methods which are taught and indirected by teachers have changed greatly. According to a research by a psychologist, eye movement is jumping motion while reading, not moving forward slowly word by word. However the new curriculum standards require the amount of vocabulary for students in junior high school can not meet the requirements of the current English reading materials.

Equally important, the sentence is the basic unit of text. So the correct understanding of the sentence"s meaning requires students to master the correct sentence structure. Under the influence of new crriculum standards, students begin to have more solid grammar knowledge, can identify and understand long sentences, difficult sentences or with insertion elements with a better reading ability.

And then, compared with past, students begin to have a better understanding of English language national folk cultural background, values, history and geography and other knowledge. While reading, students can have a reasonable assumption, thus lead to abilities in comprehension. With a better knowledge of social background knowledge of Europe and the United States, students can understand the article better.

At last, inappropriate ways of reading not only affect the reading speed but also affect the understanding of the overall thought and purpose of articles. In the process of implementation of the new curriculum standards, students begin to develop good habits of reading, such as grasping the logic relations between paragraphs of this article, so the article can not be in correct induction, inference and evaluation. Since the implementation of new curriculum standard, it puts forward new requirements for English teaching in junior high school, it also asks a higher level of requirements of students" reading proficiency. So we must make adjustments in reading teaching according to the new curriculum standards, to adapt to the characteristics of the course, the methods of teaching reform, to stimulate students" reading interest, to improve the students" reading ability. English teachers have been studying hard and practicing the concept of new curriculum standard, renewing the idea, changing teaching methods and pursuing reform and constant progress. However, there are still some problems in English teaching. As a result, the teaching atmosphere is very good, but the actual teaching effect is not ideal. Therefore, how to improve the efficiency of English class teaching is still an important subject in front of English teachers in many junior high schools.
