对等翻译理论视角下两会记者招待会口译研究 An Analysis of Interpretation in the Press Conferences of NPC and CPPCC from the Perspective of Equivalence文献综述

Introduction

Since the successful implementation of reform and opening policy and construction of modernization, China, is developing at the ever- accelerated speed and speeding up to communicating with the world. Nowadays, China plays an indispensible role in international affairs, which inevitably draws the world#8217;s great attention on Chinese politics, economy and culture. With the unfolding of the CPPCC and NPC each year, interpretation in the conference stands for the connection between China and the rest of world. The interpretations of the CPPCC and NPC are the channel built between the government and foreign media. To a largely extent, the quality of interpretation has significant impact on the status of China. In recent years, studies on the English translation of have been gaining popularity among scholars. As such, research on the English rendering of the CPPCC and NPC has been conducted from different perspectives, enabling effective viewpoints.

However, there is much room for improvement in the translation of the CPPCC and NPC into English, compared with that of other kinds of translation. For quite a long period of time, studies and discussions of such translation have focused on the comparison between the translated text and the source text rather than the target receptors. Starting from the western translation equivalence theory, the author intends to make a preliminary study of the translation of government work report in the current Chinese international communication, aiming to find out the underlying translation principles and some effective translation strategies and techniques in this area.

Literature Review

Since the 1950s, "translation equivalence" has been warmly discussed in the translation studies, and "equivalence" has become the goal of translation for many translators. Theorists of different schools proposed their notions on the equivalence in translation from different points of view. Mary Snell-Horny (1995:88) once stated that "Because this notion has become a major bone of contention in recent years, it deserves some discussion". A more penetrating comment was made by Wilss (2001:134), "There is hardly another concept in translation theory which has produced as many contradictory statements as the concept of translation equivalence". In spite of that, many translation theorists do not share completely same opinions on the definition of translation equivalence. And its value and role in translation practice are various in different theories.

Catford at first gave the translation a definition as "the replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent material in another language (TL)" (1965:20). And he emphasized "the central problem of translation practice is that of finding TL translation equivalence."A central task of translation theory is that of defining the nature and conditions of translation equivalence (1965:20).”Then he proposed "formal correspondence and "textual equivalence", both of which are on the basis of analyzing the SL and TL from the angle of linguistics. "A textual equivalence is any target text or portion of text which is observed on a particular occasion to be the equivalent of a given source language text or portion of a text" (1965:27). The "translation equivalence" in Catford's theory was only achieved on the linguistic level, between a source language item and its correspondence in the target language.

Newmark is another great translation theorist in the West. One of his contributions is the proposal of semantic translation and communication translation. He stated that semantic translation "is personal and individual, follows the thought processes of the author tends to over-translate, pursues nuances of meaning, yet aims at concision in order to reproduce pragmatic impact" (Newmark, 2001:46). Communicative translation "attempts to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensive to the readership" (Newmark, 2001:47).

More and more scholars and interpreters have concentrated their study on functional equivalence since the theory had come out especially Chinese scholars. They take the advantages of Nida's theory and combine their own rational analysis. Tan Zaixi (1999) puts his focus on the contents of its development, division of three phases, its values and contributions. According to Tan, the validity of translated texts can not be judged by common people, but by the translators, scholars, critics and linguists enjoying readership (Tan Zaixi, 1999:22). He points out that Nida's translation theory is product of the practice and can be proved effective in the practical translation. Jin Di approves "functional equivalence" can apply to translation between Chinese and English and has great significance for general translation practice. His theory of ``equivalent effect" exactly comes from Nida. Jin also brings forward three important concepts, namely receptor, effect and equivalence in Nida's theory in his book Search of the Principle of Equivalent Effect (1998). The practical implication of effect is claimed. Huang Youyi, deputy director of China International Publishing Group, provided three policies to guide the Chinese-English translation for publicity in one article published on the Chinese Translation Journals. To be specific, firstly, translation shall be close to the situation of China's development; secondly, be close to the foreign receptors' need of China's information; and thirdly, be close to the thought pattern of the foreign receptors. He held that the third principle deserved special attention of translators. That is, the translated version must conform to the thought pattern of the target text receptors (2004). Cheng Zhenqiu is one of those experts who commit themselves to explore the translation of Chinese political texts. He composed many articles on this research field. In one of his articles published on the Chinese Translation Journals, he put forward that the translation of political texts should be politics oriented which is also the topic of this article. He explained that the translation of political texts shall be more accurate for contents of the texts refer to basic state policies of a nation. Any mistranslation or inaccuracy in the translated version could cause severe consequences. He emphasized that translators engaged in the translation of political texts should focus on the political implications and impacts of expressions, and should have political sensitivity (2003).

Methodology

By means of searching relevant literature materials of on CNKI at home and board, the author has a comprehensive understanding of the concept, classification and development of functional equivalence theory and Chinese-English conference interpreting. Meanwhile, the author turns to some scholars (Njtech) for help on this paper by e-mails and telephones, which offers great assistance on the completion of this paper. With consulting a number of books about the subject in the library and the accumulation of knowledge, the writer keeps the paper more persuasive and scientific between the theory and practice analysis.
