儿童动画字幕口语化翻译策略研究——以《小猪佩奇》为例毕业论文

摘 要

本文以英国动画《小猪佩奇》的翻译字幕为研究对象,并对比了英语原创版本和中文翻译版本。本研究在3-6岁汉语儿童词汇语料库基础上,概括并分析了《小猪佩奇》翻译版本的词语和语法并指出在英语原创电影和中文翻译版本里语言的相似点和不同点。在此基础上,本论文会总结研究英国动画《小猪佩奇》字幕翻译的优点和缺点,并对现有的翻译给出意见。

本文的正文将分为四个部分。第一章叙述研究目的和背景。第二章回顾前人的研究内容和成果。第三章分析动画片小猪佩奇具体的字幕翻译案例,并叙述其翻译的优缺点。第四章阐述本研究的主要发现,并对现有的翻译给出建议。

AbstractThis paper will take the English cartoon Peppa Pig translation as the research object, and compare the original English version and the Chinese version. Based on Chinese children’s vocabulary corpus and English children’s vocabulary corpus that has been collated by previous people, this article will describe and analyze the vocabulary usage and grammar of the translation language of Peppa Pig, research the animation Peppa Pig subtitle translation theory and translation strategies of applications, and points out similarities and differences between original English animation and Chinese translation version of children's language. On this basis, this article will summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the animation translation of Peppa Pig and give suggestions for existing subtitle translation of the animation.The body of this article will be divided into four parts. The first chapter describes the research purpose and background. The second chapter reviews the research contents and achievements of the predecessors. The third chapter analyzes the specific subtitle translation case of Peppa Pig, and describes the advantages and disadvantages of the translation. The fourth chapter elaborates the main findings of this study and gives suggestions for existing reading subtitles.

Study of Pre-school Animation Subtitle Translation Based on Peppa Pig

1 Introduction

Research Background

In 1980, Astro Boy, as the first foreign cartoon introduced to China, won the love of children. Since then, more and more foreign animations have been introduced into China and translated into Chinese, and the culture of animation subtitle translation has developed gradually. More and more children audiences have started to contact English animation or Chinese translation version. Among them, Peppa Pig, a British pre-school cartoon, hit instantly in China, winning the favour of a large number of children.

In September 2015, Peppa Pig was broadcast on the CCTV Children Channel at 7 am, and the ratings ranked first quickly in the morning file of children animation program broadcast. Then, Peppa Pig was launched on iQIYI, YOUKU and Tudou in October 2015. Peppa Pig was viewed more than 10 billion times of a year. Peppa Pig is a British pre-school television cartoon created, directed and produced by Astley Baker Davis. The story recounts from a four-year-old pig. It centres on her happy experience in her family, which is humorous and funny. It promotes traditional family values and friendship and encourages children to experience life.

With the popularity of English cartoons, many parents and teachers in bilingual kindergartens have even started to teach children simple colloquial English vocabularies and sentences by broadcasting the original English animations. However, there is no transparent rule system for English-to-Chinese translation of children's animation subtitles at present. The language usage habits of Chinese children are different from English language usage habits. All these problems need to be solved with translators’ secondary language creation.

Research Purpose and Significance

The translation strategies and methods of children animations are different from those of adult works. Children animation translation has gradually become an essential branch of translation studies. Although many scholars have proposed and analyzed the translation strategies and cases of animated subtitles, there are few case studies of children animated subtitles. And most of the current research articles of Peppa Pig animation discuss its business and animation content rather than its subtitle translation. This paper will analyze the translation strategies of animated subtitles for children aged 3-6 years, and use these strategies and methods to focus on the case study of Peppa Pig.

Watching cartoon is one of the children important entertainment activities. Animation is closely related to children's life. Children are in the critical period of language learning, and their vocabulary accumulation is limited. The expression that children master is a mainly simple spoken language. As a vital input method of children literature, animation subtitles have a significant impact on children listening and oral expression inevitably. Peppa Pig, as a popular imported cartoon, is contacted, learned and imitated by children in the critical period of language learning. Proper subtitle translation will have a positive impact on children's language and behaviour habits. Conversely, inappropriate translation may mislead children and have a negative effect.

The author hopes that this paper can help the children animation translators understand the spoken language of children aged 3-6 years better. Then, the article will help more preschoolers understand the animation content and learn spoken language by sorting out conversation language usage habits and subtitle translation strategies.

Structure of the Thesis

The body of this article divideds into four parts. The first chapter describes the research background, purpose and significance to help audiences know about animation Peppa Pig and animation subtitle translation. The second chapter describes the existing research on the translation of animation subtitles and the research on children's vocabulary corpus. The third chapter analyzes specific subtitle translation methods and translation cases of animation Peppa Pig. The third chapter compares children vocabularies of Chinese animation and Peppa Pig, and the third chapter describes the advantages and disadvantages of its translation in combination with translation methods. The fourth chapter elaborates the main findings of this study and gives suggestions for existing translation subtitles.

Literature Review

2.1 Previous Study on Animation Subtitle Translation

In the era of silent films, predecessors have already started to carry out similar work of subtitle translation by modifying the subtitle card of film and television subtitles. With the appearance of audio films and the increased frequency of cultural communication between international countries, Western film and television subtitle translation culture is gradually emerging. After the reform and opening up, the introduction to overseas films and the increase in internal film output brings more opportunities for the development of internal subtitle translation research. At the beginning of the 21st century, different scholars and experts have put forward principles and strategies of film and television translation and put film and television translation in the perspective of cultural studies, combined with other theories, endowing subtitle translation research with multi-angle, multi-level and interdisciplinary characteristics.

The essence of translation is the transmission of information. To convey the information on one unfamiliar language environment to the audience in another language environment, the first principle is accurate. The Subtitle is something outside the movie. The ultimate purpose of making subtitle is to help people enjoy the film and television better rather than concentrating on the subtitle and ignoring the film itself. The Subtitle is not a perfect transmission of the original film content. In the process of subtitle translation, there are many objective conditions limit the non-native audience to understand the original film content make translators have a lot of difficulties. Clear translation strategies and standards will help non-professional subtitle groups and non-experienced translators convey information better.

However, most scholars focus on the film and television translation played by real people at present. Animations are not played by real actors but are created by technical means. The number of animations viewers is small. The target viewers of animation translation are children and animation lovers who watch foreign adult animation. At present, many Chinese scholars have analyzed strategies and cases in the field of animation translation. Moreover, the animations produced by companies such as Disney Factory provide excellent model translation cases of internal animation translation field. However, internal animation translation still lacks specific and unified translation standards recognized by all translators.
