Abstract

In recent years, science and technology has advanced rapidly, greatly contributing to the communication between countries and regions, and the connections between countries are closer and they communicate with each other more frequent than before. Thus, the demand for translation service is growing. Meanwhile, the content of translation is diversifying, and most of translation work is non-literature now, and translators need to combine knowledge in specific field while translating. Besides, the timeliness of translation is increasing. As a result, we have witnessed the rapid development of the Computer-Aided translation, becoming an indispensable tool to perform translation work and improve market competitiveness. Unlike Machine Translation, the main technologies of Computer-Aided Translation include document conversion, text extraction, corpus alignment, terminology extraction, management of translation project, translation memory and so on. By using Computer-Aided Translation, we can greatly improve our working efficiency, and also ensure the consistency of the translation. But Computer-Aided Translation also has some limitations.

This paper will introduce the main technologies of Computer-Aided Translation especially their status quo. First I introduced the development background of Computer Aided Translation, and then I gave some detailed information about the status quo of major Computer Aided Translation technologies and tools. Finally, I compared the advantages and disadvantages of Computer Aided Translation technologies and gave a conclusion.

The Status Quo of Computer Aided Translation Technology

1 Introduction

1.1 Factors that Contribute to the Development of Computer-Aided Translation

First of all, globalization has witnessed a fast development in the past decades, countries in the world are communicating with each other more frequent than before. They exchange message about political management, economic development, culture communication and environmental protection. Although in international communication, most of the times we use English, countries in the world still have the right to use their own language, and languages in the world are diverse. Thus, there is an increasing need of translation under the circumstances of globalization and informatization, and the scale of translation project is growing. All of the translators, translation companies and translation institutions need to find ways to translate the material to target language more quickly while improving quality. All of the translation workers are facing this trouble now. Changes in translation market require new standards in the speed and quality of translation. So, the coordination of translation work is of vital importance, thus, we can perform translation tasks and improve market competitiveness by using translation software. No matter Machine Translation or Computer-Aided Translation, they are all created to satisfying the increasingly growing translation demand. Thus, technology advancement offered possibility to Computer Aided Translation and the development of the times offered soil where Computer Aided Translation can thrive.

Besides, there are many new changes in the modern translation industry. As translation demand is growing rapidly, the translation field is industrializing. A new industry chain has been formed; from translation software company and Translation Company. In the traditional translation mode, translators begin to translation once they received the text. But in the modern translation mode, translators need to do some works before and after translation. Unlike the traditional translation mode, modern translation has four new features.

(1) The content of translation is diversifying

In traditional translation, most of the times translators need to deal with literature work with a printed content. While at present, world has changed, and non-literature translation is playing an increasingly important role. In modern translation market, non-literature translation accounts for 95% of the total translation demand. (Li Changshuan, 2004). Since 2007, in language servicing industry, most of the works are related with technology, software, medicine, law, market and finance. Besides, with the development of technology, the documents translators need to handle are not only in the form of text, but also possibly video, website, power point and software and image. In 2007, the value of website translation, has reached to 1.7 billion dollars. (Lin Hua, 2006). Therefore, under this circumstance, translators need to first extract the translation content, and then translate, after that, they put it back. Thus, in order to ensure the translation quality in this modern translation mode, we must rely on technology.

(2) The timeliness of translation has been strengthened.

As non-literature translation becoming the main content of modern translation, the timeliness of translation has been greatly strengthened. Some of the documents needed to be translated are usually the last step of product development and project initiation; the translation speed will greatly influence the progress of the project. Besides, producers may want to release products in the whole world at the same time; the importance of timeliness in translation needs to meet a higher requirement.
