1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)

nowadays, with the process of globalization developing fast, the trans-culture communication has played an essential role in shaping a nation’s image. for trans -culture communication, it is crucial to tell chinese story well. chairman xi has pointed out that, in the international promotion, we must tell chinese story and spread chinese voice well. however, while doing trans-culture communication, people pay more attention to tell the positive story and successful people to foreigners, rather than the real and objective image of china, let alone using appropriate techniques.

une vie chinoise is a chinese cartoon telling a common chinese people’s whole life stories under the background of time changing, which has aroused wide attention in foreign countries. the stories in this book is a reflection of reality, including not only the positive stories, but also negative ones, which is a good example for trans-culture communication. this paper aims to analyze the propaganda techniques used in this book and use communication theory to explain these techniques. according to the above content, the paper will offer some techniques of telling chinese story well and the ways of strengthening our ability in trans-cultural communication in general.

there are various ideas about trans-cultural communication and chinese national image. edward twitchell hall, the father of trans-culture communication, has put forward the definition of “high context culture” and “low context culture” in 1950s. since then, trans-cultural communication has been widely discussing. in xu lisheng’s article strategic competence for intercultural communication, he believes that communication often involves a high degree of unpredictability and creativity. this is surely more often the case in intercultural communication than in communication within a culture. in the paper cross-cultural management in china written by keyong dong and ying liu, the authors mention that, cross-cultural training should include personal space (whether someone is close of distant from you when talking); terminology/language differences (and tone of voice); body language/mannerisms/gestures; hierarchy of leadership; physical dress/wardrobe; determination of leadership; personality characteristics; providing positive and negative feedback (how, when, and is it done publicly or privately). liu jianming believes that, in order to reach a better communication effect, chinese media should turn the communication idea from “publicity” to “communication”; follow foreign media’s way of reporting, establish the public trust, and popularize chinese culture, which give us some enlightenment of trans-culture communication. for chinese national image research, tao xie’s article “what affects china's national image? a cross-national study of public opinion insists that, the only macro-level factor we find to affect china's image in a country is that country's level of economic and social development. in the article “stereotypes of the arabs and chinese: a study on intercultural communication written by yahya hassan sharahili is suggested that there are several aspects that should be dealt with through the efforts of the governments of arab states and the government of china: media field, cultural field and promotion of tourism, which has put forward some ways to improve the china’s national image throughout the world. in the article public diplomacy and chinas national image written by tan youzhi, the author thinks that china’s hard and soft power is undergoing a rapid expansion, but the country is struggling to significantly improve its national image overseas. chinese need to build an accessible, favorable and attractive national image to achieve a successful public diplomacy. jia jinan’s paper construction and communication of national image of china in the crosscultural context believes that, china is in a cross-cultural context, for better construction and communication of national image of china in the cross-cultural context, great efforts should be made to avoid virtualizing image, formalized communication, traditionalized cognitive framework, ideology-oriented overseas propaganda, puppet-like wording, and impatience in image creating.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

une vie chinoise is a successful example for trans-cultural communication. this paper will introduce the book briefly first, including background, author, honor and main ideas about this book. then, the author will analyze some content elements of this book, aiming to show reasons for its success. for example, using novel art form-picture-story book, telling vivid chinese story, telling a common chinese people’s story and using universal value to arouse resonation. and finally, the author will conclude the chinese story telling techniques in this book and the enlightenment it gives for trans-cultural communication, which includes taking foreign readers’ fancy, translating the language as well as the culture, and telling true and objective chinese story. the author of the paper will use stuart holden’s coding-decoding theory in communication to explain the reason why the tellers can’t reach their communication effects.

under the background of globalization, it is crucial and indispensable to tell chinese story well. by analyzing the techniques used in une vie chinoise, the paper will give some suggestions to do trans-cultural communication well. therefore, to discover the proper methods and techniques for successful trans-cultural communication from microcosmic point of view is the ultimate goal and the hope of the paper.

the author of the paper will choose to use “text analysis” and “contrastive analysis” to finish the paper. she will read some references and background to comprehend this topic, and put forward some suggestions for chinese story telling.
