1.目的及意义

In differentcultural backgrounds, people's values and ways of thinking are alwaysdifferent, which affect people's communicative behaviors. Cross-culturalcommunication is a domain that studies these subjects. In the process ofcross-cultural communication, body language plays an auxiliary and supportiverole in language communication. Obstacles are inevitable in the process ofcommunication. If cross-cultural communication wants to go smoothly andsuccessfully, it is necessary to overcome these obstacles in time. Therefore,it is of great significance to understand the meaning of body language inintercultural settings. Movies and television programs are important carriersof intercultural practices, which enable learners to study culture in differentcontexts more intuitively. As a famous Chinese director in the world, Ang Lee'smovies have great influence on the world's movies. He has won many awards andnominations at important international film exhibitions. His movies typicallydepict the exchange and collision of Chinese and Western cultures. He usedmovies as the media to provide a good platform for cultural exchanges betweenChina and the West.

Since 1950,breakthroughs have been made in the study of body language abroad, especiallyin the field of sociology and anthropology. The most famous books areBirdwhistell's Introduction to Kinesics(1952)and Hall's Silent Language(1959),which are called the cornerstones of the study of body language. As for thecomparative study of body language, Chineseand English Gestures: Contrastive Nonverbal Communication (Brosnahan, L) isthe first book to make an intuitive, comprehensive and systematic comparison ofbody language. The research directions of body language at home and abroad arebasically the same, and domestic research is greatly influenced by foreignresearch. Among them, Li Jiequn's Introductionto Nonverbal Communication and Geng Erling's Introduction to Body Language have great influence. With the rapiddevelopment of cross-cultural communication, body language has becomeincreasingly crucial, and the domestic literature on body language research isalso on the rise year by year. However, the field of domestic cross-culturalresearch is relatively narrow, mainly focusing only on language contrastivestudy and foreign language teaching. Due to the inadequate attention andinvestment in this field, the research of nonverbal language still has a longway to go.

In order to expandthe research field of nonverbal language research and combine theory withempirical research, the goal of my research is to analyze body language in AngLee's movies from the perspective of cross-cultural communication. This paperaims to understand the deep meaning behind Ang Lee's movies, to comprehensivelyunderstand body language, and to further expand the cultural research of movies. In order to illustrate the similarities and differences between Chinese andWestern body language, the author utilizes the comparative research methods tolearn about the conflict and reconciliation of Chinese and Western cultures incommunication, which contributes to harmonious development of differentcultures, meanwhile, helps readers achieve success in cross-culturalcommunication.
