1.目的及意义

Feminism has been a hot topic ever since human civilization walked into modern society. In 17th century, British women made a collective appearance on the historical stage for the first time, and strove for their own religious and political rights of writing and publishing, that was the beginning of modern feminism. And after that, in the late 19th century, a large number of outstanding literary works created by women emerged, which symbolizes feminist literary creation has come to a prosperous period, and this kind of boom continued to 20th century.Jane Eyre , created by Charlotte Bronte in 19th century and Mrs. Dalloway, created by Virginia Woolf in 20th century, the objects of this thesis, are very representative works of British feminism at that time.

In Jane Eyre, the author tells the story of a British woman who has turned into an orphan in childhood and pursues freedom and dignity in various hardships, persists in self, and finally gets happiness. The novel shows the love story of the heroines and the ups and downs, praises the resistance against old customs and prejudice, and successfully creates a woman image that dares to resist and dares to fight for freedom and equality. Researches about feminism in Jane Eyre mainly focus on the attitude heroine holds toward love and marriage, a common view is that the novel elaborates that women' love and marriage should be based on the principle of "life value equals dignity plus love",which appeals to women to be self-respecting, independent, and equal in the face of love(凌红波,李茂瑛,2018).Another point is to analyze the novel from the aspect of the “ mad woman”, some scholars analyze the image of the "mad woman" shaped by Charlotte Bronte and her inner desire to express the depression caused by various forces, further indicating that the heroine actively transforms herself into a demon to achieve the rebellion the male set for them, thereby realizing the goal of post-colonial feminists to strive for equal rights and social status with men(王伟,2016).

In Mrs. Dalloway, the novel depicts the details of one day’s life of the protagonist Clarissa Dalloway in the UK after World War I.Through Mrs. Dalloway's life experience, Woolf showed us the life of Mrs. Dalloway in the constant struggle and compromise. Resistance is a rebellion against reality, and compromise is a choice of life. The emptiness and boring life made Mrs. Dalloway become a worldly woman. The cruelty of the war made her think about life and death. Even so, her daily life, even herself, has no spiritual support. She totally lost in the maze of material wealth and spiritual emptiness. The study of this novel mainly focus on two aspects:one is the oppression of women in the patriarchal society and Woolf' s affirmation of women' values(李思远,2015), the other is the awakening of women' consciousness in British women after World War I(赵江涌,李焱,伟尹楠,2014).

The innovation in this paper is to analyze the British feminism by comparing the similarities and differences between feminist consciousness expressed in the two novels of Jane Eyre and Mrs. Dalloway to figure out the changes and development taht British feminism has achieved in the nineteenth century to the twentieth century. It is a vertical comparison on the timeline. At the same time, the focus of this paper is to analyze the reasons for the changes and development of British feminism from the 19th to the 20th century, to find the necessary conditions for the development of feminism, and to provide experience and suggestions for the development of feminism today.
