this paper aims at exploring the extensivethemes and metaphors of nathaniel hawthorne’s literary works such as book the scarlet letter, the house of seven gables, short story young good man brown and analyzing themfrom different aspects.

nathanielhawthorne, american novelist and short-story writer who was a master of theallegorical and symbolic tale. one of the greatest fiction writers in americanliterature. hawthorne’s work initiated the most sustained tradition in americanfiction, that of the symbolic romance that assumes the universality of guiltand explores the complexities and ambiguities of man’s choices. his greatest short stories and fiction the scarlet letter, the house of seven gables are markedby a depth of psychological and moral insight seldom equaled by any americanwriter.
