1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述包含参考文献)

1. Introduction 1.1 Research background 1.1.1 About the author Katherine Mansfield (1888- 1923) was born and brought up in colonial New Zealand, she went to England for study when she was 15. Since then, she started her wandering life away from her homeland. Mansfield #8217; s life was full of frustration and hardships - failure of marriage, alienation of family, jealousy of peers, accidental death of her beloved younger brother, threat of diseases, loneliness of drifting outside, all these inspired and shaped her prolific works to relieve all kinds of pains. She was regarded as one of the most internationally famous short story writers who was closely associated with D.H. Lawrence and something of a rival of Virginia Woolf. She had a great influence on the development of the short story for creating a new writing style called plotless format in the English literature. Her plots of short stories were very simple, just depicting people#8217;s ordinary life, but the implied themes reflecting the social issues were thought - provoking. Most of Mansfield#8217;s short stories were based on her happy childhood in New Zealand. Among them, she created many different vivid children images with the purpose of expressing her sentiment of nostalgia and the better expectations for children#8217;s growth. 1.1.2 About novels involved The Young Girl depicts a young girl who longs for growing up hastily to be a delicate lady with the loss of her mother#8217;s care and company, but unfortunately everything doesn#8217;t go as she expects. She made a fool of herself all the time. The author uncovers the girl#8217;s depression, anxiety and inner scars facing the adult world alone during growth. At the same time, her ignorant younger brother is happy and relaxed to get rid of constraints by his strong mother and elder sister. The Doll#8217;s House depicts a very stratified society where a real beautiful doll#8217; s house is only accessible to middle class rather than kids from lower class. The snobbish and indifferent kids in rich family who are exposed to the cruel and cold adult world should have been innocent and simple. Only Kezia is different and sensitive to realize the inequality between two classes. As a result, she makes a rebel against her family and social hidden rules and keeps respect on everyone#8217;s desire for a warm home and a hopeful future by showing the doll#8217; s house to Lil and Else. The Garden Party depicts a dauntless and self-contradictory middle-class girl who struggles for rising awareness from inequality. In such rearing environment where is isolated from lower class, on the one hand, she opposes the class division that stops her making like- minded friends with devoted workers. On the other hand, she acknowledges the existence of the two class difference for disgust at the dirty and messy living condition of the lower class. 1.2 Need for the study Katherine Mansfield is a sensitive, sentimental and self-contradictory writer. Her short stories aren#8217;t like her complexity. They are very easily to read because these stories just happen in some ordinary scenes of life and the heroines#8217; feelings are same as ours in life. Some must be very curious and wonder why there are still many continual studies on her and her works until now. I think it lies in her three important traits. The first one is her detailed observation and feelings for life. Although her life is full of frustrations, she still keeps writing as a paradise for comfort. All of her creation is based on her personal experience and no make up. Therefore, her plot of stories is easy but thought-provoking. The second one is her great foresight on writing themes because she focuses on children#8217;s growth and happiness and realizes the importance of harmony. Nowadays, these two things are important issues to the public. The last one is her simple writing style and plain but vivid language expression. At her living times, she created a new kind of simple writing style - plotless which doesn#8217;t follow traditional writing format including beginning, body and ending. Art is from life, we cannot ignore the writer#8217;s information and experience to help us understand their creative characters, especially for Mansfield. 1.3. Literature review As one of the greatest feminism short story writers in the world literature in 20th century, the analysis of Mansfield#8217; s creating children images, motives of writing and writing techniques about her short stories have been greatly studied. However, combination of the above mentioned perspectives to do an overall study is important and beneficial to understanding the characters of Mansfield#8217;s works. In addition, the creation perspectives include more like creative inspiration and creative features besides motives of writing. All of Mansfield#8217;s works are fully based on her social and personal experience. Her creative inspiration was built on her life (Wang, 1997). She lived a turbulent and miserable life full of frustrations (Zeng and Wu, 2011). All these sufferings motivated her writing on purpose of relieving insecurity, unstable sense and fears (Chen, 2010). On the one hand, writing conveyed her continuous craving for love and sense of belonging from outside. On the other hand, she vented her strong anger for both physical and mental oppression (Yang, 2013). To some extent, writing consoled her, not confined to it, she still sought for more purposes and meanings. She wanted to keep harmony with people, but she didn#8217;t get it all the time (Li, 2007). She gave up and realized as a woman she had no ability to change that disappointing society by herself (Wu, 2007), she chose to escape from reality via recalling her happy childhood memory and making a fantasy dream returning back childhood (Gao, 2004). Most of children images are pure and innocent she created also showed her great expectations for children #8212;#8212;being close to nature, growing up happily and being understood by adults (Liu, 2012). In spite of these, many children heroines all went through disillusionment and went for rebellion in her stories (Huang, 2009). Readers can feel the contradictory feeling and loneliness from these children images (Li, 2007). All of researches show Mansfield#8217;s familiar writing skill including comparative description and detailed description in depicting children. Consequently, readers can understand these children more deeply. Reviewing the above-mentioned studies on the analysis, we can find only after knowing more about author#8217;s creative perspectives, better understanding about children images behind the author#8217;s intentions is easier. In fact, character images are a symbol of writers and reveal their personal style. We not only can feel the feelings these children have through Mansfield#8217;s experience, but also see Mansfield#8217;s shadow from these children images. Art is from life.
