1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述包含参考文献)

1. Introduction 1.1Research background Amy Tan, a Chinese-American writer, deserves a special place in the study of contemporary Chinese American literature. Among all the Chinese American writers, Amy Tan undoubtedly occupies a representative position. In 1989, the Joy Luck Club, which is the first novel of Amy Tan, wins great fame for her. She is good at describing the subtle emotions between mother and daughter, usually taking the leading role in Chinese-American women. Amy Tan's novels show the positive side of Chinese traditional culture, and describe the traditional festivals such as the Mid Autumn Festival, the Spring Festival and the Qing Ming Festival in China. For example , the expression "The Joy Luck Club" depicts the warm scene of Mid Autumn Festival , "this day, all kinds of utensils and food for the people, each with four boxes of moon cakes, people will travel to Taihu, worship the moon goddess" is full of the exotic atmosphere, which expresses Chinese people's attention to the national tradition. China#8217;s image in Amy Tan's novels is a typical image in the Chinese literature. The formation of the China#8217;s image has a profound social and cultural cause. Amy Tan had been told a lot about Chinese story by her mother and her understanding of China also stems from her mother, her family and the Chinese community. Amy Tan often takes the leading role of Chinese American women born in the United States. This group of Chinese women not only face the problem of racial identity, but also have to be under the pressure of their parents. The Joy luck club won the National Book Award and was made into a film by Hollywood. It tells the story of four Chinese immigrants in the United States, by playing mahjong together and know each other, set up a club "the Joy Luck Club", which placed their hopes for a better life. Each of the four Chinese women have one daughter. They have difficulties in communicating with their daughters born in the United States. Obviously, this communication barrier comes from the mother and daughter#8217;s different cultural backgrounds . The four mothers' daughters accept the new educational mode and life mode from childhood. There seems to be an inaccessible gap between them. The concept of marriage, in a word, is people#8217;s view and attitude towards the marriage and family. There is a great difference between the westerners' view of marriage and the view of the Chinese people's marriage.Westerners believe that marriage is a private affair, no one can interfere, and there is no moral problem in marriage. The marriage in the past in China was certainly a family affair. That is to say , parents should take the responsibility and obligation for their children#8217;s marriage. So their parents also have the right to decide who they want to marry. There are two reasons for this phenomena. Firstly, this stems from the patriarchal system in China. Secondly, marriage is a means to expand the communication and strengthen the power of the family. 1.2 Need for the study Practically speaking, feminism in the Joy Luck Club can provide numerous inspirations for the modern women. Nowadays, there are more and more exchanges such as international marriages between China and the West. Understanding the differences between Chinese and Western concepts of marriage can improve people's intercultural communication ability, helping people who want to marry abroad get to know each other better and respect each other's custom. Therefore, people can be able to deal with conflict in a marriage and communicate well. Theoretically speaking, the different view on marriage in this paper can give scholars more hints at studying from new research perspectives. Last but not least, readers can have a comprehensive understanding of the Joy luck club and the literary achievements Amy Tan has made as a writer. 2. Literature review 2.1Chinese and American Marriage Values 2.1.1Marriage Values Marriage value , in a word, is people#8217;s view and attitude towards the marriage and family. Marriage comes from love, not the grave of love. Because married couples are close friends and intimate friends and have a deep emotional foundation, they have the same view on many things, and finally, based on a common goal of life, get married together and spend the rest of their lives together. There is a great difference between the westerners' view of marriage and Chinese#8217;s view of marriage. Westerners believe that marriage is a private affair, no one can interfere, and there is no moral problem in marriage. 2.2.2 Development of Chinese Marriage Value The marriage in the past in China was certainly a family affair. That is to say , parents should take the responsibility and obligation for their children#8217;s marriage. China's traditional view of marriage is generally described as a hundred years old. They focused on one end, so they were very cautious. They tended to think farther and think more thoughtfully. But Chinese people always put their parents in the bottom of their hearts. They would ask for their parents' opinions and sincerely expected their parents' blessings. But in real life, because of such problems, there were many cracks and even deconstruction in the family. The change of contemporary Chinese marriage values includes: the feelings of marriage have been greatly improved, the tolerance of marriage diversity has been greatly improved, the idea of freedom of marriage has obviously become common sense, marriage is more autonomous, the status of men and women in the family is more equal, more emphasis on marriage is a personal affair, a reduction in the negative evaluation of divorce, society is more tolerant of premarital sex, diversity of awareness of extramarital sexual behavior and the number of celibate is increasing. 2.2.3 Development of American Marriage Value Some new changes are taking place in the concept of marriage in the United States. Firstly, unmarried cohabitation has become a normalization. According to the Census, there are five million two hundred thousand unmarried cohabitation partners in the United States by 2012, who have two million two hundred thousand children. But now, not only is the young people living a life which is called non - marital cohabitation in the past and even their parents are starting to get used to it and choose such a way of life. Secondly, same-sex marriage is being legalized. Nowadays, the United States has recognized the legality of same-sex marriage, which is not possible in the past. The orientation of choosing spouse is tend to be racial diversity . There is about ten percent white lady would like to marry Indians, the Middle East, the Asian (the East Asian), and the Negroes, which is unthinkable in the past. 2.2Previous studies on the Joy Luck Club The Joy Luck Club was firstly translated into Chinese by Chen Naishan in 1989. Since then, a lot of Chinese scholars have done tremendous research from various perspectives. Two perspectives should deserve our attention: Characterization and thematic analysis. Quite a few scholars show great interest in the analysis of characters . Yang Chunyu makes an analysis of Linda Gong and Yingying Gu in the Joy Luck Club from the perspective of marriage and concludes that despite living a different life, they share the same miserable destiny in their marriage and the same mission of fighting for feminine rights in a patriarchal culture. The Chinese scholar, Kan Wen who analyzed the conflict of transnational marriage in the novel in order to find out the reasons for the failure of transnational marriage. Chen Feng (2014) depicts the different ethics of marriage in China and America through analyzing the life between Li Na and Ha Luode. Compared with the aforementioned scholars, Zhao Liang(2013) gives a relatively thorough analysis of the marital status of all the major characters in The Joy Luck Club. However, she doesn#8217;t study in depth the relevant causes and effects; as a result, her interpretation seems to be superficial. 2.3Deficiency in previous studies As one of the main views appeared in the Joy Luck Club, the view of marriage is the key to the deep understanding of the themes and Amy Tan#8217;s#160;different view on marriage between America and China.#160;However, the relevant search of cannot witness much analysis in the novel from the perspective of marriage, despite the fact that some scholars have studied comparatively on the view on marriage of main characters in#160;the Joy Luck Club.
