(Chen 2001;Chou and Chi 2000;Silverstein, Cong,,and Li 2006;Zhang and Liu 2007),但关于中国老年寡妇和鳏夫的生活安排与生活满意度之间的关系的研究仅限于Wang, Chen, and Han2014年对80岁及以上寡妇的研究。

(Lee and Kwok 2005;Ng, Phillips, and Lee 2002)。 Wang, Chen,and Han

(Poulin and Deng 2012;Poulin et al. 2012)。Pinquart and Souml;rensenrsquo;s (Chan and Lee 2006;Liu and Gong 2000;Pinquart and Souml;rensen 2000;Xu et al. 2003;Zhang and Yu 1998)和受教育程度(Chou and Chi 1999;Ho et al. 1995;Tao et al. 1998)是中国老年人主观幸福感的重要预测因子。

(Canty-Mitchell and Zimet 2000;Cheng and Chan 2004;Chou 2000)。Zhang and

The life satisfaction of elderly Chinese widows living alone and those living with adult children

John Poulin,Linda Houser and Rong Deng

Care of Chinarsquo;s elderly population is of concern due to its projected growth as well as to changes in elder care patterns related to shifting social and economic conditions. Increases in life expectancy and, therefore, in the duration of widowhood, particularly for women, magnifies this concern. Studies that examine the living arrangements and life satisfaction of elderly widows in China are limited. This study of 147 elderly widows, both men and women, examined differences in the life satisfaction of those who live with their adult children and those who live alone. This study also examined whether the relationship between living arrangement and life satisfaction was moderated by levels of family and community support. According to study findings, elderly widows living alone have higher life satisfaction than those living with their adult children, and this effect remains with the introduction of controls for health status, family support, community support, gender, age, income and educational level. Further, neither family nor community support moderate the relationship between living arrangement and life satisfaction, although each exerts a direct effect on life satisfaction.

Elder care has become a priority of the Chinese government over the last decade (Zhan and Montgomery 2003). Concern about caring for the elderly in China has increased dramatically as a result of the Chinese governmentrsquo;s recognition of the projected increase in its elderly population overall and a corresponding increase in the number of elderly widows and widowers. Chinese demographers have predicted that by 2050, 22.4% of Chinarsquo;s projected 1.4 billion people will be aged 65 or older (Population Reference Bureau n.d.). In 2000, male widowers accounted for about 23% of the Chinese population aged 65 and over (United Nations Statistics Division 2000a), and female widows accounted for 50.5% of Chinese elders (United Nations Statistics Division 2000b). Data from the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey found that of the respondents aged 60 and over in 1998, almost 65% were widowed in 2005 (Korinek, Zimmer, and Gu 2011).

Concerns about the growth in the elderly population and the number of elderly widowers and widows have been compounded by changes in norms for family care and by the governmentrsquo;s adoption of a market economy (Leung 2006). In China, adult children have traditionally been the caregivers for their elderly parents, but the countryrsquo;s lsquo; One Childrsquo; policy has resulted in fewer children to take on these responsibilities. The care of the elderly by their children is further complicated by the fact that the new market economy promotes geographic mobility (Lai 2009). There has been extensive youth migration from places of birth to large urban centres driven by a search for work and economic prosperity. The long-established tradition of filial piety, where children are expected to demonstrate respect and take care of their elderly parents, is being challenged by the social and economic changes taking place in China (Sun and Chang 2006), resulting in changing care patterns for the elderly. In response to growing concern about the number of elderly adults living alone, China passed a law in July 2013 requiring children to visit their elderly parents (Wang 2013). The trend away from living with adult children, together with the fact that widowhood is becoming an extended experience for the elderly due to increased life expectancy, particularly for women (Li et al. 2011), raises serious concerns about the growing elderly population in China.

Living arrangements for elderly persons have changed and are likely to continue to change as a result of the social and economic changes that are taking place in China. Chen and Silverstein (2000, 46) concluded that lsquo;the elderly in China are more likely to live alone than at any time in the pastrsquo;. According to a September 2009 survey of 692 Chinese households by Li and Chen (2011), while Chinese elderly adults lived in diverse settings, the majority (67.8%) lived independently and not with their adult children. It is quite possible that this trend will continue and that even larger numbers of the elderly will be living alone rather than with their adult children (Wu et al. 2010). How these changes will affect elderly adultsrsquo; life satisfaction is unknown. Although there have been research studies examining the relationship between living arrangement and the life satisfaction of elderly Chinese adults (Chen 2001; Chou and Chi 2000; Silverstein, Cong, and Li 2006; Zhang and Liu 2007), research on the relationship between living arrangement and life satisfaction among elderly Chinese widows and widowers is limited to a 2014 study by Wang, Chen, and Han on widows aged 80 and older. This study addresses a gap in the literature by examining the relationship between living situation and life satisfaction in a sample of Chinese widows and widowers age 65 and older.

Literature review

The importance of family is a central value among the Chinese (Cheng and Chan 2006). Filial piety is the lsquo;expression of responsibility, respect, sacrifice, and family harmony that regulates childrenrsquo;s attitudes and behaviors towards family-based supportrsquo; (Wong, Yoo, and Stewart 2006, S4). Traditionally, elderly persons rely on family members for care and support (Wu et al. 2010). Adult Chinese children, particularly the oldest sons, are expected to provide care and support to their elderly paren
